[SOLVED] Will the ATI FireGL v7600 work in mod Linux and what driver will it use?

Howdy,

I've tried researching this before reaching out to you lot guys again but the data online wasn't really articulate on how the bill of fare would work nether linux, does this menu piece of work nether the open up source radeon driver or is it the proprietary catalyst commuter from ages agone? Was likewise wondering if there would be any advanced options to tweak the output via a separate program different to the mint display setting page either included in the radeon app or driver.

Thanks,

Information technology's just piece of work with the radeon commuter, which would be installed in the kernel. Catalyst/fglrx was deprecated in Linux some time ago by AMD and I don't know of any currently supported Linux distro you could still employ it with. There are no tweaks included with the driver.

The Ubuntu docs claim that card would back up hardware accelerated video (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver) but that's an old card and those doctor pages aren't ever up to date. EG the newest release mentioned in that site I just linked is Ubuntu 16.04 and they're on at least xix.04 now. Y'all may go accelerated video but I wouldn't assume information technology.

I tried running information technology with the default driver and was getting pretty bad performance, it couldn't discover any other driver via the director, I checked AMD'due south website and tried installing the goad driver information technology gave me and now information technology isn't booting into the desktop environment and giving me the concluding full screen. It keeps saying that the dkms won't install and hangs, if anyone tin help me out information technology would be great. Thanks

Mint 17 was the last version that supported the Goad (fglrx) commuter.

Select Advanced options > Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot bill of fare. If no menu shows, then hold downwardly the Shift key while starting. In the menu, select root - drop to root shell prompt and press ENTER. Press ENTER again.

Type this control to modify the file permissions to read and write: mount -o remount,rw /

Type this control to remove the driver: aticonfig --uninstall

Type: reboot

Does your PC also have integrated Intel graphics?

Can you lot run a alive session using the Mint installation USB / DVD and go the output of inxi -Gx

Information technology does and here's the final output from the alive usb

Graphics:
Device-ane: AMD R600 GL [FireGL V7600] driver: N/A motorcoach ID: 01:00.0
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 commuter: vesa resolution: 1280x1024~Northward/A

Strangely, the vesa commuter is loading. I was hoping to see radeon and hardware acceleration.

Looking at your inxi --SMCGxx output again, this line nevertheless lists fglrx:

unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa alternate: fglrx

It's possible an fglrx configuration file still remains. Use this command to check for a file named fglrx-core.conf:
locate fglrx-core.conf

If that file doesn't exist and this line was present in the inxi output right after installing Mint, then I suggest trying a live session with Mint 18 or getting a newer video card or utilise the Intel graphics.

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 8.0 128 bits) five: iii.3 Mesa xix.0.8

When I typed that in, it came back with a blank final line.
From memory, I remember it modifying xorg files. Information technology even so performs the aforementioned as before I installed the onetime drivers

At that place's one other pace you tin try, which is to try switching to the generic modesetting driver. Utilise this control and and then log out and dorsum in: apt remove xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Use the inxi -Gx command to check if the switch was successful or vesa is loading.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctl+Alt+F1 to enter tty1. Use this command to re-install radeon:
apt install xserver-xorg-video-radeon

Now when I login information technology flashes in text style that band 0 has stalled, I tried reinstalling the driver in recovery mode as root only it won't connect to my wifi router now

I was just in the process of replying with this message:

At the Chow boot carte du jour select the correct line but don't press Enter. Printing the "East" central to edit. Use the Downwardly arrow central to go down to the line that starts with: linux /boot/vmlinuz.............ro quiet splash $vt_handoff

Go to the end of the line. Add a space and so blazon: nomodeset

Press F10 to start your system. At the desktop, re-install the radeon driver.
